Step awaaaaay from the cake!

10 Oct

After a lovely and intense workout, I always get inspired. Usually I get inspired to eat things that I shouldn’t eat, but luckily today the inspiration led me elsewhere.

I have been running Bella Pastry Bakery in Gaborone since around 2009 (under a different name). It had initially started out as just a cupcake catering company because cupcakes are my passion. I absolutely love them. I find them to be more practical than a cake. You can have your own individual one without having to purchase a whole cake and cut it into slices and run the risk of letting the cake dry out unless you finish it in the same day. They are portable and virtually your own private cake. What is better than that, really?

Another reason why I love cupcakes is because they are so adorable to decorate. Yes you can decorate cakes and send special messages via them, but that just strikes me as so old-fashioned. Cakes are overdone. Our grandparents and parents have completely overdone the cake thing. Might as well put a toothpick with a written message into a scone or a rock bun and call it innovative.

Cupcakes are just generally a fresher way of entertaining. You can use them to spice up your corporate events, huge birthday parties, nightclub events, anything. By simply placing a small edible image and some edible glitter on top of these little babies you can promote your brand/event in such a cool and non-traditional way. And, you can eat it afterwards, it literally doesn’t get any better than that.

So why am I giving you this whole schpeel about my seemingly intense love affair with cupcakes? Well because, I wanna tell you another little story about my business experience. After endless calls from people asking if I do kiddies cakes, and 3D cakes and this cake and that cake, I bit the bullet and decided to train myself on how to make abovementioned cakes and started to include them in my menu. Not something I wanted to do AT ALL, but in business, sometimes you have to get over yourself and do what you don’t want to do to get what you need. What you need being revenue, profit, and the likes.

Bella Pastry Cupcake Cake…best of both worlds 🙂

However, being the perfectionist that I am, I have decided to (for the moment) stray away from CUSTOMISED cakes (we still doing plain cakes with buttercream icing) for the simple fact that I don’t like doing shabby jobs. I want my customers to feel like they’ve walked out of Buddy’s Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey (think Cake Boss on TLC), or Divine Delicacies in Miami. Not a shebeen version of a bakery in Gaborone. So, it’s best to stick to what I know and what I know, is CUPCAKESSSSS (and cookies, brownies, muffins, cake pops/truffles and Cinnamon Rolls). But yes, it’s time to bring Cupcakes BACK to the headlining spot on the bill and to gently ask you, my trusty customers and friends, to step away from the cake.

What you want from a cake, you can get from cupcakes, guys. In an even more nifty and presentable manner for that matter. It’s 2012. You do not need the towering fondant covered cake that your guests will not even eat and that you and your husband will dangerously FORCE your teeth into months after the wedding because it’s tradition. Why not go for a Cupcake/Cake Tower combo. That being a tower of delicious, highly edible cupcakes with a top cake (so you can still stick to the tradition of having that gosh darn fruit cake and plastic icing).

Wanna propose? Why not get your fiance-to-be a box of delightful little cupcakes with the words “Will You Marry Me” spelled out on top, or stuck into the cupcakes? Want to apologise, say ‘thank you’, ask anything else, inappropriate or appropriate? Yes, dear friends, you can surely do that with cupcakes.

Every now and then…

6 Aug

…I have to put up a healthy food post. After all, this blog originally started as just a simple food blog where I spill about all my favorite things to eat, and every now and then my unfavorite things to eat.

Well recently, I decided that since this is my very last year in my twenties (dun, dun dunnnnn), I want to be in the best shape that I’ve ever been in in my entire life. I want to enter my thirties like Beyonce and I have the same trainer and chef and life in general.

This meant getting back in it with my secret weapon, my trainer Austin at Energym who is amazing, by the way and most importantly EATING RIGHT!

Luckily, I live and die for gym so it’s never been a problem for me to get up and go work-out, but unfortunately, the other thing I live and die for is food. And it is the most important part, so they say, in getting healthy and not just losing weight!

I am not big on numbers when it comes to kgs/lbs because I believe it’s about loving the way you look and also, BEING HEALTHY. But when I found out my body fat percentage was soaring through the skies and WAY higher than it should be for my height, size, etc., I took that fairly seriously and decided to change my eating altogether in order to get that down, even more seriously than getting my actual weight down.

This means, now I have to “Eat Clean.” I’ve so far cut out a few things, or rather, let me be honest, dramatically reduced the intake of a few things. Those few things being wheat, because of the gluten in it, which is a major contributor to bloating, dairy, refined sugars, fried foods, and anything that is overly processed. Horrendous, I know, but health matters so I am sooooooo ready to take this on! Hope I’ll be able to write back to you all in a few months with some great updates on this whole health kick, but don’t you worry, I’ll still be posting delicious yummy pics of all the goodies I’m baking for Bella Pastry.

But for now, here’s a few pics of very tasty, healthy breakfast pics…..

This I made for breakfast this morning. I bought a really good Gluten-Free Waffle Mix from the supermarket. Its pretty easy to make. You just mix with a little oil and some water and put it on a waffle pan. Voila. Surprisingly it was super delicious and I couldn’t even tell they were gluten-free. I had them with some scrambled egg-whites, a little Slimmer’s Choice Medium Fat Gouda, half a grapefruit and my secret weapon, Green Tea. So filling and SO GOOD.

And this was a similar breakfast, but its Oat Bran made with water, half a grapefruit (I love me some grapefruit), 1/2 an avocado, 2 hardboiled egg whites and again, Green Tea.

It’s important to eat well, but eat enough….hope I’m not the only one on this health tip!! Good luck to those of you who are with me 🙂

Corporate Cupcakes

12 Jul

I was elated to get a request from one of our local newspapers, Botswana Guardian, for corporate cupcakes the other week! FINALLY!!! Companies here fail to realise how there are so many different ways to enhance your marketing and client/customer retention that go beyond the traditional cooler bags and t-shirts and other obnoxious corporate gifts (like those ridiculous branded desk clocks…..bleh)!

The rest of the world has grabbed onto the whole branded cupcakes trend for events and other corporate purposes, so I breathed a huge sigh of relief when Guardian asked us to do their corporate cupcakes which would be given to their clients as gifts.

It’s the Guardian’s 30 year anniversary, so they are in the process of doing breakfast runs to their clients using our cupcakes (amongst other yummy eats gotten from elsewhere) on an almost weekly basis.

Fabulous, fabulous stuff. Well done to you, Guardian, for picking up on the trend and congratulations on an amazing 30 years of providing our nation with accurate and time-relevant news! Be blessed!

12 Jul

Sorry I haven’t been updating my blog in a while, July has been super hectic, which is always a good thing for Bella Pastry 🙂

Anyway, just wanted to post two more pictures of cakes I’ve recently done.

The first one is one of my favorite cakes, ever. The Hello Kitty Cake.

I’m a massive Hello Kitty fan, and have been ever since I was 6 years old, and still can’t shake her. So when I was asked to make a Hello Kitty cake for a little girl’s birthday party, I was more than excited to do so. It wasnt hard to make at all. I didn’t use a ready-made pan, I actually just cut out the shape as close to the real thing as possible. It’s not identical, but pretty good, I think!!! It was simple to decorate, which is always good LOL, but came out beautifully!!!

And next is another birthday cake with the Manchester United emblem, altered to reveal a cute little message for the birthday guy!

Thanks to all who have continued to support Bella Pastry with all your many orders! Keep them coming…
